The Unique Venejoki Mill

The Venejoki watermill has provided various services in the northern part of Kontiolahti, in the village of Venejoki. The riverbanks were once home to numerous mills, with Venejoki Mill being one of the largest during its operational years. The mill holds timeless stories as a vital resource during the war and times of scarcity, as well as serving as a home to multiple generations. Milling operations ceased with electrification in the 1950s, but members of the same family still bring life back to the mill environment.

The entrepreneurs’ dream is to create an experiential meeting place that honors history, where shared events continue the story of Venejoki.

Delicious Meals and Mill Spaces

Inside the mill, there is seating and tableware for 30 guests. The two-story building offers additional space for about 15 people upstairs. The upper floor works well for group activities, while the ground floor can be arranged with tables either grouped together or separated for different gatherings. Upon request, we provide catering services, including dinners, breakfasts, brunches, and even coffee for concerts. The facilities also include dishes, a refrigerator, and thermal coffee makers.

The mill building is unheated, but terrace heaters and blankets can be provided if needed.

The restroom building is located on the other side of the yard and includes a separating dry toilet and a handwashing station.

The mill is situated in the yard of an old farm, across the river. The surrounding area features several bridges and old dam channels. The lower level of the mill is accessible, though the farm buildings are not available for guests, with the exception of the outdoor toilet. There are also farm animals living on the premises.

On Responsible Paths

Behind Venejoki Mill is a small, family-owned business. Responsibility guides all our actions and decisions, and we aim to encourage our customers and partners to adopt this mindset as well. For us, responsibility is something that is always present, ensuring the continuity of our operations in the future. We strive to be part of various sustainable development networks and to make visible the effective actions and practices we have already implemented.

Examples of our responsible practices include the planned maintenance and restoration of the traditional landscape, selecting local labor and products for development and new construction, involving the village and communities in the mill’s operational development, and extensive recycling while adhering to our values. We prefer to use second-hand furniture and materials. We do not use disposable tableware and wash our dishes with environmentally friendly detergents. For larger groups, we serve with ecological, local Kupilka dishes.

We welcome everyone to be their authentic selves. Our company is committed to treating all customers and partners with respect and equality. Our company was selected as the Responsible Tourism Operator of the Year in 2024

About Us

Venejoki Mill is a small family business run by a little family that moved back to their ancestral farm during the pandemic. The same family has inhabited the Myllylä estate since 1892, with the current residents representing the fifth generation in the heart of the village. The vibrant and child-rich community plays an important role for the entrepreneurial family. We aim to raise our children within this village culture, where everyone shares a common responsibility for well-being.

Our family operates several businesses, including a graphic design studio and the nearby Venejoki Piilo accommodation village. Three generations are currently active on the premises, each playing their own role in the mill’s story. We are united by a shared interest in traditional crafts and the exploration of various new ideas. Together, we build, develop, test, and, above all, seek ways for the old estate to serve new generations.

Warmly welcome to be part of the mill’s story!
